Multicultural Broome is world-renowned for producing South Sea pearls and the Shinju Matsuri Festival helps the community and visitors celebrate this unique history.
In the late 1800s, people from Japan, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Europe came to Broome to work alongside the local Aboriginal community in the pearling industry.
The very first Shinju Matsuri Festival was held in 1970 to celebrate the end of the pearl harvest. Now, the festival continues to honour Broome’s pearling history and the cultural traditions of the community. The festival is run over nine days, celebrating the four main cultures in Broome which include Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and Aboriginal. Performances by local and regional artists, walking tours, art exhibitions and a Yawuru language course are just some of the amazing events that make up this spectacular festival.
