Lotterywest grant boosts care for WA wildlife
As volunteers wrap up their busiest time of year caring for hundreds of injured, orphaned and displaced animals, Mandurah Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is set to deliver safer, more advanced treatment thanks to Lotterywest support.
A recent Lotterywest grant of $29,648 has provided new equipment for the Centre, which will allow safer, more controlled treatment of animals.
The grant has funded ICU bird cages, brooders with inbuilt nebulisers, soft‑sided transport carriers, and training programs for around 15 volunteer wildlife carers.
The Dawesville Centre is powered entirely by volunteers who manage everything from wildlife care and transport to administration, gardening, maintenance and vegetation management.
Mandurah Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Board Chair Joanne Evans is the Centre’s longest-serving volunteer and said animals mainly arrive from members of the public and local vets.
“The aim is always the same, rehabilitate animals and return them to their natural habitat,” she said.
“Our new Lotterywest supported equipment is making a huge difference to the way we can treat sick and injured wildlife and means animals can receive more precise, less stressful care - especially our smallest and most fragile patients.
“At the moment we have 57 animals in care, and over the past few months we’ve seen steady admissions every week. This time of year is always busy at the end of summer when wildlife is at its most active, but it’s also when our volunteers shine.”
Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith said Lotterywest’s grant is about supporting a passionate community-led organisation that has been rehabilitating animals for more than a decade.
“Western Australia is home to so much beautiful flora and fauna, and Mandurah Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is doing amazing work caring for WA’s injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife and returning them back to where they naturally thrive,” Mr Smith said.
Lotterywest has supported Mandurah Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre since 2006 with grants totalling more than $265,000.
