Lightning strikes twice for Saturday Lotto winner
A south-of-the-river man who previously shared in a $30 million OZ Lotto jackpot has won Division One again, this time collecting $1.8 million in a Saturday Lotto Superdraw.
The man, in his sixties, who bought his ticket from Palmyra Supa News, is the first of three Superdraw Saturday Lotto Division One winners to come forward.
In 2015, he was part of a 10-member syndicate that won $30 million in OZ Lotto, taking home $3 million.
For his latest win, he played his favourite numbers, made up of his parents’ full birthdays and combinations drawn from his immediate family’s birthdays. He has been playing variations of these numbers for about eight years.
“When I won 11 years ago, we took a holiday, cleared some debt and helped out the kids,” he said.
“This time, I’ll be able to transition into retirement sooner than I had planned.”
Reflecting on his second Division One win, he acknowledged how rare the experience is.
“I didn’t play for a while after the first win, but I like to play when there are big jackpots or Superdraw weekends, and I also play weekly in a syndicate with my friends,” he said.
“After this win, enough is enough! I’m going to enjoy my retirement with my wife.”
He discovered the win on Saturday night after checking his numbers on the Lotterywest website.
“I went to the newsagency where I buy my tickets and the newsagent said to me, ‘What are you doing here on a Monday? Did you know we had a winner?’ and I said, ‘I do actually, I think it’s me,” the man said.
“I haven’t even told my wife yet, last time she didn’t believe me, so I thought I’d come and collect the presentation cheque and show her that.”
The winning numbers were 22, 14, 6, 21, 9, 3 with supplementary numbers 38 and 20.
Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said joining a syndicate organised by a Lotterywest retailer is a great way to share the cost and increase your chances in tonight’s $40 million Powerball draw.
“Syndicates can be a very cost-effective way of playing,” Ms Fitzhardinge said. “Most retailers will have a range of syndicates on offer, or you can organise your own, as long as you have at least five players and spend at least $5 each.”
Thanks to Lotterywest players, a $282,000 grant from the Arts and Cultural Infrastructure Grants Program has supported upgrades to Fremantle’s Victoria Hall.
