From outback WA to the icy wilds of Alaska thanks to Saturday Lotto
There can’t be many people in the world who can say that they have been contacted by an authority to be told they are $1.8 million richer.
A southern suburbs electrician and his wife were five hours out of Perth on a work trip when he got an email from Lotterywest asking him to get in contact.
“I thought it was a bit weird to be honest,” the man said. “The Lotterywest person calmly said, ‘Do you know why we contacted you?’ and I said, ‘No, unless I’ve won a bit of money.”
On learning that he had indeed won Division One of the 20 June Saturday Lotto Superdraw, the couple, who are in their 50s, first contacted their family, then started the long drive back to Perth.
“We Facetimed the kids, but then we realised we didn’t know how much we had won, so my daughter looked it up and we all found out together that it was $1.8 million,” he said.
“That was a really nice thing to share together.”
Three generations of the family piled into the Lotterywest Winners Room and were already discussing how to enjoy the winnings, with one of his adult children pushing for a family boat.
“I don’t know about that, but we will be going on a holiday to Alaska – that’s been on our bucket list for years,” the man said.
His wife, who also works in their business, said it was a holiday well earned.
“If anyone deserves to win, it’s him. He’s a really hard worker,” she said.
The player bought his Slikpik 25 through Lotterywest Play Online.
The family was the second of three winners from last Saturday to come forward. There is still one more winner yet to claim their prize, and an unclaimed prize of $772,000 from the Saturday 23 May 2026 draw.
Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said last night’s Powerball $40 million jackpot generated an estimated $7.8 million for the community during its four-week run.
“When Western Australians play Lotterywest games, the community wins because we give all available profits back to the community through grants,” Ms Fitzhardinge said. “For example, a Lotterywest grant of $85,000 supported the City of Kwinana to develop a series of events encouraging community participation and belonging.”
