Western Australia’s winning Saturday Lotto ticket worth $1.6 million has been claimed by a northern suburbs woman in her 50s.
It was the first Lotto ticket the woman had bought for over 20 years, which she purchased on a whim while running errands locally.
“The last time I bought a Lotto ticket my children were babies and now they’re all grown up,” she said.
“I saw online that a ticket sold in Malaga had won and thought I better check my numbers.
“I almost forgot I had the ticket altogether.”
That night, the woman checked the winning numbers online and saw she had all six. The winner was in complete disbelief and returned to Malaga Newsagency the next morning to confirm.
Staff were able to confirm the Division One win to the woman and her family, resulting in lots of screaming, crying, laughing and even singing.
When claiming the $1.6 million prize at Lotterywest HQ, the winner said she plans to buy a new house, a new car and help her family.
“It’s life changing, it really is. I’m so happy and excited.”
Bob Hu, owner of Malaga Newsagency said it was incredible to sell two Division One winning tickets in less than six months, after a group of workmates shared a $30 million Powerball prize last October thanks to a ticket also bought at this store.
“It’s really surprising to be honest, I’ve only had the store for a short period and have sold two Division One wins already,” he said.
“The previous owners hadn’t sold a Division One prize for almost a decade I think.
“It was the same staff member that sold both winning tickets. We have been very excited this week.”
WA players have a chance to become a multi-millionaire in the upcoming $20 million Saturday Lotto Superdraw on 29 March.
The last Saturday Lotto Special Event in February saw a ticket sold from Forest Lakes Newsagency turn into a $3.3 million prize.
Tickets are available until 6pm on draw day in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App.
