Set for Life game change leads player to $1 million surprise

A FIFO rigger who usually buys a Set for Life ticket has found a silver lining worth $1 million after switching to Millionaire Medley during the game's upgrade and winning Division One in Friday's draw.

The 45-year-old purchased a System 9 Slikpik entry in Millionaire Medley when Set for Life was temporarily unavailable while Lotterywest rolled out enhancements to the popular game.

Now, the delighted winner says he's set for life anyway.

"I was out for dinner with my daughter when I checked the ticket and I couldn't believe it," he said.

"I called my mum and asked her to check it because I thought I had to be seeing things.

"I started house hunting straight away and we've already been to some home opens, even before collecting the prize money."

The winner and his partner had only recently completed one move when the life-changing prize landed.
"I'd just helped my partner move into an apartment, so she'll have to move again straight away," he said.

"I'm happy to move all the furniture again if it's into our own place."

The first item on the winner's list is paying off his mother's home, followed by purchasing a home for himself and his partner.

The prize will also help support his 18-year-old son, who has been caring for his grandmother.

"(My son) can do some courses, get his licence and do some things that will help set him up for life too,” he said.

Despite the win, the winner has no plans to give up work.

"I told my boss I'd won and that I'd still be coming to work because I love what I do so even if I won $20 million, I'd still be there the next day," he said.

Lotterywest spokesperson Nikki Wilson-Smith said the story was a reminder that life-changing wins can happen across any lotto game.

"While he may not have expected to play a different game that day, the outcome has certainly delivered a life-changing result for him and his family,” she said.

Ms Wilson-Smith said Set for Life’s game enhancement now offers an immediate upfront payment.

"Set for Life now offers Division One winners $200,000 upfront plus $20,000 every month for 20 years,
while Division Two winners receive a $20,000 upfront payment and $5,000 a month for 12 months," she said.

Thanks to Lotterywest players, the 2026 AWESOME International Children’s Festival will provide free arts and cultural experiences this school holidays across Perth, Kununurra, Bunbury and Albany, to help children and families participate in the arts and strengthen community wellbeing.
