Scrabble playing pensioners secure Saturday Lotto success
Members of a northern suburbs Scrabble club are celebrating the ultimate win, after the group of five players purchased a winning ticket in Saturday Lotto last weekend.
One of the club’s members, a woman in her 70s, purchased the winning Slikpik 12 ticket from The Lucky Charm in Warwick on behalf of her Scrabble club buddies, which is now worth more than $919,000.
When visiting the Lotterywest Winners Room today, the winning friends said they have been playing both the famous word game and Saturday Lotto together for more than 40 years.
“Our Scrabble club is very serious, we meet every Tuesday except in school holidays and our games are very competitive,” one of the winners said.
“There’s five of us in the club at the moment and we have all been friends for decades, so to share a big Lotto prize together is very special.”
After seeing the winning numbers appear on the television on Saturday night, it didn’t take long for the life-long friends to start sharing the good news.
“I am very strict with documenting everyone’s scores each week at our Scrabble meetings, so it’s my responsibility to write down the Lotto numbers each week as well and check our ticket,” one of the players said.
“As soon as I realised I had circled six numbers, I made a cup of coffee and jumped straight on the phone to my friends and we talked about the win together until the early hours of Sunday morning.”
Plenty of West Aussies were also celebrating over the weekend thanks to Division Two success.
WA secured eight Division Two Saturday Lotto wins, with six players pocketing more than $14,000 while the other two Division Two wins were shared by syndicates.
Fresh after last week’s Division One Set for Life win, this weekend saw two WA players score Division Two prizes, which will see them take home $5,000 a month for 12 months.
Thanks to WA Lotto players and retailers, all available profits from every Lotto ticket sold supports community groups across the State.
A Lotterywest grant of $370,000 is supporting not-for-profit Northern Compassion with the expansion of Tenacious House, which offers mental health and rehabilitation services for men in the northern suburbs.
WA players have the chance to start the new year in celebration, thanks to Saturday Lotto’s $30 million Megadraw on 3 January. Tickets are available now and until 6pm on the day of the draw in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App.
