Power in numbers: Some of WA’s most memorable Powerball wins

If a Western Australian ticket takes out this week’s entire $100 million Powerball jackpot, it will become WA’s largest Division One prize on record.

Looking back through history, many of WA’s biggest Powerball wins have been shared by syndicates, where a group of players come together, often family, friends or workmates, to share the cost of a ticket and hopefully the joy of a win.

Lotterywest took a trip down memory lane to remember when that hopeful joy of a win became a reality for some WA players.

Currently holding the title of WA’s largest Lotto win are 55 women from a northern suburbs gym who claimed the entire $80 million Powerball jackpot back in December 2021.

The women from Curves, a ladies-only gym in Beldon, each had a $5 share of the ticket sold from Beaumaris News and Post in Ocean Reef.

The $80 million prize made WA Lotto history and gave those 55 players a Christmas to remember.

Could history repeat itself ahead of the festive season this week and give another WA player a Christmas they’ll never forget?

In October 2022, a group of 18 workmates won a slice of a $160 million Powerball jackpot, pocketing $53 million. This ticket was sold by Boulder Newsagency and Lotto and changed the lives of 18 families in the Goldfields region.

This Powerball jackpot was the first time the group had bought a ticket together, which was followed by a rainbow appearing over their mine site pit on the evening of the draw.

Just last month, a group of 15 workmates shared a $30 million Powerball prize. The ticketholder, who started the group more than seven years ago, forgot to buy their usual Saturday Lotto ticket and purchased a Powerball ticket instead.

Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender said it’s fantastic to see large prizes shared by a group of family, friends or workmates.

“This week’s $100 million Powerball jackpot is a great opportunity to get together with family, friends or workmates to share the cost of a ticket and hopefully the joy of a win,” she said.

“WA has already started the week off with a bang, with a Millionaire Medley Division One win in last night’s draw.

“The winning ticket, now worth $1 million, was sold at The Lucky Charm Noranda. We look forward to welcoming the winner to Lotterywest HQ soon.”
