Mirrabooka man spends week with $1.25 million in his pocket

A Mirrabooka family are celebrating a $1.25 million Saturday Lotto prize after the winning ticket spent a week tucked away in the grandfather’s back pocket.

After more than 25 years playing family birthday numbers, the man in his 60s recognised the winning numbers on draw night and knew he had won a Division One prize.

Initially unsure of the prize amount, the winner excitedly shared the news of the win with his two children and their partners, who soon confirmed the family had won an incredible $1.25 million prize.

The family visited Lotterywest HQ last week to claim the prize and were proudly joined by their newest addition - a grandchild only weeks old.

When asked how he kept the ticket safe during the week-long wait, the man joked that he kept it “within reaching distance at all times”, in his back pocket.

In more good news for WA, a Saturday Lotto ticket purchased from Galleria Lottery Centre in Morley matched the numbers to a $5 million Division One prize over the weekend, thanks to Saturday Lotto’s $10 million special event.

WA’s winning ticket was one of two Division One winners nationally on Saturday night, with the other winning ticket sold in New South Wales.

Raymond Woo, owner of Galleria Lottery Centre said his Monday had been busier than usual, with lots of customers excitedly congratulating him and his staff.

“It’s pretty great to sell a Division One winning ticket, it creates a buzz in store with lots of customers asking us about the win and wishing it had been them,” Mr Woo said.

Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender said the $5 million prize was WA’s largest Saturday Lotto prize won since May 2024.

“It’s been wonderful to welcome a flurry of Saturday Lotto winners into the Lotterywest Winners Room over the past few weeks, including the Mirrabooka family with their tiny new addition,” she said.

“Rather than relying on a pocket, I’d always recommend registering your ticket to a Lotterywest membership for safe-keeping – thank goodness this winner didn’t throw his trousers in the washing machine.”

The WA community can also celebrate, with Saturday Lotto’s $10 million special event raising more than $2.1 million for Lotterywest’s grants program.

A Lotterywest grant of $534,000 is supporting the revitalisation of Bayswater’s Riverside Gardens, including the development of an urban forest, which will enhance community connection, participation, wellbeing, and biodiversity across the City of Bayswater.

WA players have the chance to become multi-millionaires this week thanks to OZ Lotto’s $40 million jackpot.

Tickets are available until 6pm Tuesday in-store, online or through the Lotterywest App.
