Mamma Mia, here we go again – Mum’s tradition sends ABBA fan to Sweden
An Atwell family are planning an impromptu family trip to the ABBA museum in Sweden after winning a $300,000 Scratch’n’Win Top Prize.
The self-described “ABBA tragic” bought the winning scratchie at Atwell Newsagency, continuing a cherished tradition the winner once shared with her late mother.
“My mum and I used to buy a scratchie every Friday and scratch them together,” she said. “She passed away a year ago, but I’ve kept the tradition going.”
The winner said her first reaction when she realised she had won wasn’t “Money, Money, Money” or even “The Winner Takes it All”, or perhaps given their tradition, “Mamma Mia” instead, she called her family.
“I called my husband – I was screaming - then I called my son, I was screaming again!” she said.
“I’ve always wanted to go to Sweden to visit the ABBA Museum - I’m a huge ABBA fan.
“My son immediately said he’d be happy to go with me, and then my husband said yes too, so I guess that’s ‘The Name of the Game’.”
The woman also plans to help her adult son with a house deposit, share the prize with extended family, and complete renovations at home.
Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said the story reflects a common theme among winners.
“Most of our winners tell us that sharing their prize with family is a top priority,” Ms Fitzhardinge said.
“This week’s $40 million Powerball is a great opportunity to formalise that generosity by setting up a syndicate with friends and family.
“All you need is a minimum $25 spend between at least five people and a Lotterywest retailer will give each person a registered ticket – that way, even if a ticket is lost, you can still claim your prize, should you win.”
Thanks to Lotterywest players, we are able to support the Blackwood D&D Winterfest with an $11,000 grant.
The two-day Dungeons and Dragons event will be held over the weekend of 18-19 July in Bridgetown.
