Goldfields fortune: Kalgoorlie welcomes first Division One winner of the year

Kalgoorlie has produced its first Division One lottery winner of the year, with a local player winning a life-changing $1.5 million prize in this week’s Saturday Lotto Draw.

The winning ticket was one of two winning tickets with the second ticket sold at Wattleup News and Post in Perth’s southern suburbs.

Kerry Holman, owner of Kalgoorlie Newsagency, where the winning ticket was sold, said she was thrilled to hear the news.

“We’ve had a lot of people coming in to check their tickets,” Ms Holman said.

“This is our fourth Division One winner in 20 years, and it’s always so exciting when we have a winner.
“When it’s a big prize it’s even more exciting!”

Wattleup News and Post owner Lien Nguyen said it was the first time she had sold a Division One winning ticket since taking over the newsagency five years ago.

“We’ve had lots of regulars calling in to see if it is them and I really hope it’s one of them who takes home the prize,” Ms Nguyen said.

Lotterywest spokesperson Nikki Wilson-Smith said the win was an exciting moment for both the winner and the local community.

"Lotterywest retailers are often important hubs in their communities as small businesses that provide vital services, especially in regional areas,” Ms Wilson-Smith said.

"We're delighted to congratulate the teams at Kalgoorlie Newsagency and Wattleup News and Post and wish the winners all the very best as they enjoy this incredible moment."

Lotterywest players have more chances to win big this week with $50 million on offer in tonight’s OZ Lotto.

Lotterywest is supporting the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s events program with a $74,000 grant towards the Christmas Street Party and the Multicultural Festival in 2027.
