Girrawheen man's $75k birthday surprise
It was an unforgettable birthday for a northern suburbs’ man in his 50s, after he recently won a $75,000 Scratch’n’Win top prize.
The Girrawheen man purchased the $5 Word Play Scratch’n’Win from Heights Lottery Centre and News in Alexander Heights on the morning of his birthday before picking up a cake to share with family.
Despite the special occasion, the winner said he had no inkling that a win was just around the corner.
“I went to cash in my ticket thinking I’d won $1,000,” he said.
“But when I did, the man behind the counter said, ‘No mate, you’ve won a bit more.’
“I never expected to win such a significant prize.”
After discovering the full prize amount of $75,000, the winner headed straight to Lotterywest HQ to celebrate in the winners’ room.
With both he and his wife’s birthdays falling within weeks of each other, the couple plans to mark the occasion with a combined birthday lunch.
The winner said the prize money will go towards a new car and a holiday to Sydney.
Lotterywest spokesperson Jake Battrick said Lotterywest has been able to raise more than $40 million for its grant program so far in 2025, thanks to Scratch’n’Win players.
“Our grants support community groups across the State, including a $380,080 grant to the City of Wanneroo for equipment and the development and installation of Indigenous interpretive signage at the Dordaak Kepap Library and Youth Innovation Hub,” he said.
The next chance for WA players to win is in tonight’s $8 million OZ Lotto draw.
Tickets are available until 6pm tonight in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App.
