Geraldton retirees scratch up a $50K win and a Chinese banquet
A Geraldton couple’s cherished ritual of sharing coffee and Scratch’n’Win has delivered a memorable $50,000 prize – and the perfect excuse to return to the restaurant where their love story began.
The Mid West grandmother, who won playing her favourite $3 Word Play game, said she and her husband have long enjoyed picking up a scratchie as part of their morning routine.
“He will go down to the newsagents to get the newspaper and the scratchies, and I’ll put the coffee on,” she said.
The couple have always shared a playful sense of competition when it comes to their tickets.
“We are a bit competitive with each other as we will have a little win every now and then,” she said with a laugh. “I really won this time!”
To celebrate, the pair plan to revisit a place close to their hearts – the same Chinese restaurant where they had their very first date 30 years ago.
The winner said the celebration will be a family affair.
“We have a big family of children and grandchildren, so we will invite them all out for a banquet at our favourite Chinese restaurant,” she said.
“We’ll also share the prize with our grandchildren.”
She revealed a personal tradition she follows when playing the Scratch’n’Win word games she loves - using a token that looks like a Chinese coin to scratch her tickets.
The winning $3 Word Play ticket was bought at Sunset News and Lotto in Geraldton.
