From milk stop to millionaire for Caversham man

A quick stop to buy a litre of hi-lo has turned into a life-changing moment for a Caversham man who became WA’s latest Saturday Lotto winner following his milk run.

The man in his 70s stopped at a store he wouldn’t normally visit to grab a few essentials and decided to pick up a lottery ticket.

The husband and full-time carer said it was pure chance that led him to purchase the winning ticket at Beechboro News and Lottery Centre, with the change in routine delivering a Division One prize worth $1,247,399.96.

“I still can’t believe it, I never thought I’d win,” he said.

As the primary carer for his wife, the retiree said the prize would help the couple take the next step in planning for their future.

“My wife and I have been talking about moving into a retirement village close by, and we’re ready to make those plans a reality,” he said.

The winner said he also planned to share their good fortune by making significant donations to Silver Chain and charities that support children undergoing cancer treatment.

Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said it was wonderful to see a win that would help provide comfort and support for an older couple.

“This prize money gives the couple more freedom to enjoy their retirement and focus on the things that matter most to them,” Ms Fitzhardinge said.

“They will be able to enjoy greater flexibility and peace of mind as the couple plans for the future and considers the support that may assist them along the way.

“It's also thanks to Lotterywest players that we can support organisations that make a difference in the lives of older Western Australians, including Advocare, the peak body for seniors, with a $70,000 grant towards Seniors Week activities and awards.”

Ms Fitzhardinge said the next chance players have to win big is this Thursday’s Powerball which is at $40 million.

Tickets are available until 6pm on draw day in-store, online or through the Lotterywest App.
