From digital doubt to a $2M cheque in hand

An 80-year-old grandfather didn’t really believe he had won $2 million playing Saturday Lotto until he had the Lotterywest presentation cheque in his hands.

He was one of five winners of the $10 million special event on Saturday 16 May, and the only one in Western Australia.

“I always buy my tickets through the Lotterywest app,” the gentleman from the northern suburbs said.

“When I checked the Saturday Lotto results and saw that I was a winner, I didn’t quite believe it.

“I have won small amounts, and it always says how much you won, but this time all it said was ‘winner’ and no amount, so I thought it must have been a glitch.”

He asked his daughter who was visiting him at the time to check.

“I honestly thought he was having a senior moment,” his daughter said with a smile.

“But we could see that one of the last lines on the Slikpik was all filled in.

“Even so, it doesn’t feel as real as when you mark them off yourself.”

Her father agreed and said that even though he has had two weeks to get used to being a millionaire, it wasn’t until he was in the Lotterywest Winners Room that he accepted the reality.

“It was when I had the presentation cheque in my hands that I knew it was true,” he said.

Family will be the major beneficiaries of the win.

“I will be giving half to my children, and the rest will be to make my wife and I more comfortable in our retirement,” he said.

Thanks to Lotterywest players, we were able to support the Undercroft Bridge Club with a grant of $11,800 to increase community connection for participation for seniors in the City of Joondalup.

Tomorrow’s Saturday Lotto gives players a chance to win up to $6 million. Tickets are on sale until 6pm Saturday.
