First time player wins $2.2 million Saturday Lotto Superdraw prize

A first time Lotto player is still reeling after winning a Division One Saturday Lotto Superdraw prize of $2.2 million with a Slikpik 12.

“I had never bought a lottery ticket before, but when we saw the Superdraw promotion, we thought ‘why not’,” the young mother of three said.

“My favourite number is 11, so I bought a Slikpik 12 because it cost $11.40.”

Being so new to the game, she and her husband weren’t sure she had won.

“I looked online and called my husband over to check with me,” she said.

He was intrigued.

“I told her she was crazy – no one wins on their first time!” the husband said.

“Then she checked on Facebook and saw that a ticket sold at Dream Today Bunbury had won.

“We just looked at each other, and we knew a dream had come true.”

The couple, both in their 30s, moved to Australia eight years ago to build a better future for their family and have spent years working hard to give their three children every opportunity.

“I was working as an interior architect before moving to Australia, but when you come to a new country, you’ll do whatever work you can find,” the father said.

“When we first arrived in Australia, I was working three manual jobs and my wife was also working, I would get home, we would tag team with the children, and she would go to work.”

The couple said their first celebration would be a new car.

“We’ve been squeezing all five of us into a Honda Jazz,” he said. “Our next car will still be second hand, but it‘s definitely going to be bigger!”

Their next purchase will be the first home they have long dreamed of owning.

“We’ve been crunching the numbers for a while and home ownership still looked a long way off – we can’t believe we will be able to buy a home now,” he said.

Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said it was a memorable win.

“Every winner you meet is incredible, but this is the first time I’ve ever met a winner who won on their first attempt,” Ms Fitzhardinge said.

“After years of hard work and sacrifice to build a life in Western Australia, it's wonderful to see this family achieve a dream that means so much to them.”

The couple were one of three WA winners from the weekend’s $20 million Saturday Lotto Superdraw whose ticket matched the numbers to a Division One prize of $2.2 million.

WA’s other Division One winning tickets were sold by Cosy Groves Wickepin and through Lotterywest Play Online.

The Superdraw raised more than $3.2 million for Lotterywest’s grants program which supports community events across Western Australia that bring communities together like the Nannup Flower and Garden Festival, happening 7–16 August, supported by $25,000 grant.

The next chance to win is tonight’s OZ Lotto which has jackpotted to $20 million. Tickets are available in-store, online and through the Lotterywest app until 6pm on draw-day.
