Australind couple plan retirement and giving back thanks to $1.2 million Saturday Lotto win

An Australind couple can look forward to early retirement and the ability to provide even more support to their favourite charities after winning a $1.2 million Saturday Lotto prize.

After decades of hard work, the couple, both in their mid-60s, say the life-changing win will allow them to pay off their mortgage, boost their superannuation and support the causes closest to their hearts.

The couple joked that they had often celebrated a Division Six Saturday Lotto prize, but never expected to win Division One.

"We hadn't won Division Six for a while and I said to my husband, ‘I wonder if a bigger win is coming’," the wife said.

The woman was proved right when she returned to newsXpress Treendale in Australind to check her $11.40 Saturday Lotto Slikpik 12 and discovered it was worth $1.2 million.

The husband, who had planned to keep working for at least the next five years, will now retire. For the hardworking couple, helping others remains a priority.

"I support 19 environmental and animal charities. Now I can finally do more to help save the planet," the wife said.

The couple also shared a laugh about whether their 19-year-old cat should benefit from their Lotto prize.

"We offered her a diamond necklace," the husband joked.

"She didn't react, so we assumed she wasn't interested."

Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender said many Division One Lotto winners have the communities around them at the centre of their future plans.

“West Aussies are a lovely bunch, and we hear many more stories in the Lotterywest Winners Room about sharing prizes with family, friends, or beloved causes than anything extravagant,” she said.

“And the wonderful thing about playing Lotto in Western Australia is that every time you buy a ticket you are supporting our grants program, which supports hundreds of community groups every year.”

A Lotterywest grant of $179,743 is supporting the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre with equipment and resources that will give volunteers the knowledge and tools they need to deliver marine conservation and education projects.

This weekend WA players have the chance to share in a $6 million Saturday Lotto prize.

Tickets are available until 6pm Saturday in-store, online or through the Lotterywest App.
