A win they didn't see coming
A northern suburbs couple will have a funny story to tell their family when they eventually reveal they won $1 million on last Monday’s Millionaire Medley draw.
“We aren’t quite ready to tell them yet because we are still gobsmacked and we feel like deer in the headlights,” the wife said.
When they do get used to being millionaires and tell their children and grandchildren, the joy is going to come with a dose of irony.
“I used to play weekly in a shared ticket with my daughter, but many years ago, she dragged me with her to see a clairvoyant,” the wife said.
“When the clairvoyant told her, ‘You don’t need to worry about your parents, they will be comfortable – but they won’t win Lotto or anything’, she decided she didn’t want to play with me anymore!”
The retired couple plan to celebrate with an overseas holiday later in the year, renovate their house and help their grandchildren with money towards holidays and a car.
The husband said he had nearly forgotten to buy their usual weekly Millionaire Medley ticket.
“I play the same numbers every week, across the week,” he said. “I get the ticket on Sunday, and then wait until the end of the week to check, so when Lotterywest called me, I didn’t pick up at first.”
He is not the only winner who has avoided Lotterywest’s calls.
“We’re still waiting for the third winner of Saturday Lotto’s May 23 draw to answer our calls to let them know they have won,” Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said.
The player bought their $772,000 winning ticket through Play Online.
Millionaire Medley offers up a Division 1 prize of $1 million for up to six winners every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and players can participate in one draw, or all three.
Every year, Lotterywest supports hundreds of organisations in Western Australia.
Thanks to our players, Lotterywest was able to support Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue group with a grant of $82,000 towards equipment and fit out of the group’s new premises at Ocean Reef Marina.
